§ 7

The area: Belvedere and the old Fort Road

An honest picture of the hotel's surroundings: a road with a long history, a residential neighbourhood on one side, rail lines and light industry on the other, and a few useful places within a short drive.

Section checked against sources on 31 October 2026. Independent guide — not the hotel's website.

7.AFort Road, then and now

  1. The name. Fort Road takes its name from Fort Saskatchewan, the town it once connected to Edmonton. It was part of Alberta Highway 15 before the northern section was bypassed and renamed Manning Drive.
  2. The older route. Wikipedia traces the road to the Carlton Trail network, the overland route that linked Edmonton with Fort Saskatchewan.
  3. The road outside the hotel. Between Yellowhead Trail and 137 Avenue, Fort Road is a four-to-six-lane arterial. It runs along the west side of the Canadian National freight line that also links the two cities.
  4. The old village. The Transit Hotel at Fort Road and 66 Street, about 0.9 km from our hotel by road, opened in 1908 in what was then the Village of North Edmonton, annexed by the city in 1912.

7.BBelvedere, the neighbourhood

Belvedere is a residential neighbourhood in north-east Edmonton, shaped like a triangle with the railway on its south-east side, 137 Avenue to the north and 66 Street to the west. Fort Road cuts through it close to the railway edge, which is where the hotel stands. Its community league dates from 1925, and Londonderry Mall sits near its north-west corner. Around it, Wikipedia lists residential districts to the north and west and industrial ones — Kennedale Industrial, Industrial Heights and the Yellowhead Corridor — to the east and south.

In practice that means the hotel's own block looks commercial: the Google Maps view shows logistics yards and City of Edmonton roads depots around it. The houses of Belvedere are on the other side of Fort Road.

7.DWhat is not here

  1. A walkable dining street. We found none near the hotel. Most guests eat inside the building or drive.
  2. A riverside walk. The North Saskatchewan River valley is several kilometres south-west, near downtown.
  3. Hotel leisure facilities. No pool, spa or gym appears on the hotel's pages. Section 7.1 points to the city-run alternative.
